Physics
Teacher: Andrew Paradis
Course Description:
Physics is a full year (two semesters) class aimed at seniors planning to go on to college. They should have a firm grasp of the basic science and mathematics concepts covered in their other high school science and math classes. Unlike Physical Science, this class is not intended as a general education class as several topic areas require a firm grasp of the math concepts covered in Algebra II and may be beyond the abilities of a student who has not had this background.
This class will emphasize the importance of the use of significant digits and scientific notation in measurement and problem solving. Beginning with a study of the difference between science and pseudoscience, we progress through a study of classical physics noting the influence and predominance of a biblical perspective and framework of the majority of scientific discoveries in recorded history. Our study of classical physics will include motion, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, optics and light and will lead into an introduction of the basic topics of modern physics. Concepts of modern physics are introduced to give the student a framework to continue their studies of science in college. The students are taught the importance of science as personal experimentation and observation rather than speculation and hearsay.
Goals:
1. Continue training the student to synthesize the lecture content into notes that can be easily accessed in an organized format.
2. Provide the students with a solid understanding of the importance of experimentation and observation.
3. Develop the critical thinking skills introduced in their other science classes, and apply them to all areas of life.
4. Logically and carefully dissect information given to them so they can succeed above the competition they will face in life.
