Teacher: Semester I – Steve Roberts, Semester 2 – Matt Martin

Semester I

Course Description:

This one semester course will begin by opening the students’ eyes to the competing worldviews that surround them and aids them in understanding the ‘big picture’-how ideas have consequences. A vital part of the series is equipping students to develop their perspective on current issues-a perspective that motivates them to translate knowledge into action; to move from being part of the problem to being part of the solution.

Goals:

1. To help students understand that everyone has a ‘worldview’, a way of interpreting everything that happens in the world.

2. To help students understand that all the worldviews have an explanation for the universe.

3. To help students open their eyes to the war of ideas which are competing for their hearts and minds.

Semester 2

Course Description:

Life-Shaping Decisions is a one-semester course that aims at helping high school students think about life after high school. In today’s world, that is a difficult task. Most people are consumed with living life from a perspective adopted from the world around them. This course will challenge young adults with the concept of career stewardship. It will also give them the resources to begin building their own career plan wisely and faithfully in the center of God’s will for their exciting future.

Through the five aspects of the course students will be encouraged to examine their planning motives and compare them with God’s “diving board” – His perspective for career planning. They will be led through a variety of Interact exercises and lively thought provoking discussions to help them discover what talents they have to invest and examine God’s principles for right decision making. Students will complete a Career Stewardship Profile as a step-by-step means of developing their personal plan. They will do this by adding information about themselves as they discover it through their class experiences and the Interact exercises at the end of each unit.

The many activity sections in Life-Shaping Decisions have been designed to encourage students to interact among themselves and with respected adults. Many activities bring them into confrontation with themselves and their career planning choices.

Goals:

1. Assist the students in their transition from high school into their next phase of life: college entrance, vocational training, employment, and adulthood.
2. Teach and assist students the process of college admissions, scholarship search, and financial aid processes.
3. Build student confidence is public speaking through the three classroom presentations.
4. Provide a forum for active question and answer with classroom special speakers. 5. Provide career guidance in choices through the study in Life Shaping Decisions.
