Biology
Teacher:Andrew Paradis
Overview
Biology simply means the study of life. In our class we study the organisms God made at Creation, taking a look at all the levels of organisms from “simple” single celled bacteria all the way up to complex humans. We study the interaction of organisms and their effect on each other.
To supplement our classroom studies, we take a trip to Patrick’s Point State Park each year where the students spend time together studying organisms in tidepools, forests and meadows. As part of their trip, they prepare a project of organisms they observe, photograph and document habitat and behaviors. They then put all their information together with classification information from books and the internet to create a research project.
Course Description:
This course is a full year (two semester) class which discusses the scientific method, its implication, limitations, and its applications to God’s creation. After studying genetics and embryology, the students are led through a survey of all life forms beginning with bacteria, fungi, plants, protists and then moving on to other animals, concluding with a study of the systems in humans. There is an emphasis on the biological systems as they are evident in “lower” life forms and are seen to be more complex in “higher” life forms such as mammals. There are also studies of plants and of the interrelationships of living things.
Course Goals:
1. The student should be able to recognize God’s attributes which are evident both internally and externally in every part of creation.
2. The exploration and revelation of Christ and His provision in the design of each area of creation and to impress on the student the importance of glorifying Christ with their lives.
3. To develop the student’s proper relationship to his Creator.
4. To develop the proper biological foundations for those students who wish to pursue a career in biology as God’s call for their lives.
